Marj Brown is senior history teacher and head of department of history at Roedean School in Parktown, where she also serves as model UN debating coach and social responsibility coordinator. She is married to Paul Crankshaw, with three children. When not teaching, she enjoys reading, hiking and cycling.
Marj obtained her Bachelor of Arts from the University of Cape Town in 1978, majoring in History and African History (other subjects: Mathematics, Botany, Zoology, English, Speech and Drama). In 1979, she obtained her Higher Diploma in Education from the University of Cape Town. This was followed in 1983 by a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Development Studies from University of the Witwatersrand. In 2005, she obtained her Master of Arts in Heritage, Culture and Tourism Studies from the University of the Witwatersrand.
Marj was awarded the St Constantine medal for sere to the Round Square Community in 2017 and was nominated as one of Varkey Foundation top ten teachers in Global Teacher Awards in 2018.
